Reasoning in maths has become a big focus in the UK classroom and is now encouraged in maths lessons across primary education. As a Year 6 teacher I am aware of its importance for the SATs. Reasoning in maths has to be embedded in every lesson and Reasoning can be best achieved through talk-and lots of it. We are extremely proud of this resource and we have used it ourselves so we know it works. It focuses students on the skills required to explain their maths and acts as a daily reminder until it becomes second nature.
These Maths Reasoning Talk Prompts allow children to evaluate what they already know, select strategies to solve problems and draw logical conclusions. These prompts will guide students in developing their solutions, describing their solutions and reflecting on their solutions.
We have included talk prompts for maths reasoning as well as reasoning prompts for solving word problems.
The pack includes:
-individual Math Reasoning Talk Prompt cards for students
-Math Reasoning Talk Prompts on a single sheet for students
-Math Reasoning Talk Prompt for display in two sizes
-solving math problems prompts for display
-a blank thought bubble for the teacher to add their ideas onto
-one sheet of solving math problems prompts for students.
